# Enable Customizable Share Links for Advocates

Customizable share links let your advocates replace a generic shareable link with a short, branded one they choose themselves. Instead of sharing `share.impact.com/mxqv12`, an advocate can share something memorable like `share.impact.com/Acme`.

A branded link is easier to recognize and remember, and it builds trust with an audience, which can translate into more clicks and conversions. Turning on customizable share links lets your advocates personalize their own links on a self-serve basis, without needing your team to configure each one.

### Key considerations

* You must have a [custom domain](/brand/what-would-you-like-to-learn-about/advocate-program/manage-advocate-participant-experiences/set-up-a-domain-for-advocate.md).
* Customizable share links are enabled per widget or microsite. Advocates can only customize their link on widgets and microsites where you've enabled this option. If it's disabled, they keep the standard auto-generated URL.
* Each advocate can edit their share link a maximum of 5 times.
* Customizing a link is optional. Those who don't want a vanity URL keep the standard auto-generated link.

### Link restrictions

When customizable share links are enabled, the platform automatically enforces guardrails so you don't have to review each link. Advocates cannot save a link that:

* Is already taken by another advocate (links are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis).
* Contains profanity or offensive terms.
* Is misleading, for example, terms like `free`, `sale`, or `discount`, or names that impersonate a brand or a real person.

### Enable customizable share links

1. From the left navigation menu, select ![](/files/CDnwOBeIdds9r3Z6zTnO) \[**Engage]** → **Content**.
2. On the *Content* screen, navigate to your widget or microsite editor:
   * **For widgets:** On the *Widgets* card, select **Edit Widgets**, then select a widget containing a share link.
   * **For a microsite:** On the *Microsite* card, select **Edit Content** → **Base Layout** → **Dashboard**.
3. Select the **Share link** section.
4. From the *Share Link* menu, select **Edit**.
5. Select **Customizable Vanity Link**.
6. ![](/files/OoA2qxPalfCYKZvmxuU6) **\[Toggle on]** **Allow customization**.
7. Select **Save**.
   * Once enabled, advocates using that widget or microsite will see a call-to-action to customize their share link.

### Troubleshoot share links

| Situation | What it means | What to do |
| ---------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| An advocate can't find the customize option. | Customizable share links aren't enabled for that widget/microsite. | Turn on **Customizable URLs** in the widget/microsite **Share link** settings. |
| An advocate says their link already exists. | Another advocate has already claimed that slug. | Advise them to choose a different slug[^1]. Adding numbers or a dash usually helps. |
| An advocate has hit their edit limit. | They've already changed their URL 5 times. | [Contact support](mailto:saasquatch-support@impact.com) to make further changes. |
| A live share link needs to be removed or reassigned. | A link needs admin intervention (e.g., misuse or a reassignment request). | [Contact support](mailto:saasquatch-support@impact.com) to reassign or remove the link. |

[^1]: The part after the / **\[forward slash]**. e.g., `share.impact.com/Acme-123`
